Terminology

Nautical TermsBoom - a spar (wooden pole) attached to the mast, used to support the foot of a sail. Bow - the forward part of the boat. Bowsprit - a smaller spar that is attached to the bow of a boat. Gaff rig - four sided sail. Gaff - spar in a gaff rig to which the top side of the sail is attached. Hull - body of the boat. Jib - front sail. Keel - the boat's fixed and usually weighted underwater fins that extend from the bottom of the hull; minimizes sideways drifting and promotes stability. Knot - term for speed. One nautical mile per hour. Mainsail - the largest sail. Mast - pole attached to the deck that holds up the sails. Port - the left side of the boat when looking forward. Also known as red. When sailing at night, your red light lets other boats know the location of the left side of your vessel. Schooner - sailing vessel with two to seven masts. Sloop - a single masted sailing vessel with a single headsail. Starboard - the right side of the boat. Also known as green. When sailing at night, your green light lets other boats know the location of the right side of your vessel. Stern - the back or rear of the boat. Yawl - a two masted sailboat.
Aviation TermsAltitude - the height above sea level. Biplane - a plane with two sets of wings. Cabin - the cockpit of a plane. Fuselage - the long body portion of the plane. Monoplane - a plane with one set of wings. Triplane - a plane with three sets of wings.
Globe TerminologyCelestial - globe of the stars and constellations Equator - The imaginary great circle around the earth's surface, equidistant from the poles and perpendicular to the earth's axis of rotation. It divides the earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. Gores - hand applied paper map panels with curved sides tapering to a point that make up the surface of a globe. Latitude - The angular distance north or south of the earth's equator, measured in degrees along a meridian, as on a map or globe. Longitude - Angular distance on the earth's surface, measured east or west. Terrestrial - globe of the earth |
