The amazingly correct globes issued by Mercator in
1551 were available only to the privileged few.
Mercator’s ‘projection’, solving the problem of
projecting a spherical world on a flat surface,
was used for the next four hundred years.
Until 1900 all globes came in pairs, one celestial
and one terrestrial. An important part of the
culture, and even more for display and education.
